It's based on a comic book, not Shakespeare!
I thought the movie would royally suck when I saw the promotions plastered all over MySpace, but then the beau wanted to see it, because he loves Frank Miller. I was completely blown away, and being half Greek, very proud. If you don't take the time to destroy the experience by thinking things like "Oh, this character is so stereotypical," or "The plot line is so predictable! I knew that guy was a traitor the minute I saw him!", then it's a fantastic way to waste 2 hours of your life. But that's just me. - aeranthes , posted 03/30/07

Not worth watching
Controversy aside the movie was soulless. The characters were flat and archetypical at best, the narration cliched and bombastic, the cinematography was technically flawless but uninspired, the plot both predictable and unnecessarily repetitive. I was hoping for some mindless diversion but was instead annoyed by its huge failings. Even the costumes were uninspired and the bad guys appropriately anonymous hordes. Its two hours of my life I'll never get back. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. - Joseph , posted 03/24/07

Amazing!
Loved every minute of it! The movie was pure fantasy, and had a very comic-book vibe. To those who are protesting the film's portrayal of the Persian empire, I say lighten up - it's a fantasy (hell, the Greeks aren't really portrayed in all that flattering a light either). This film is well worth seeing on the big screen, I'm looking forward to seeing it again. - Trilo , posted 03/16/07

More info about the comic/movie from Frank Miller

300 is a 2007 film adaptation of the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller, itself a loose adaptation about the Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC. The film is directed by Zack Snyder with Frank Miller attached as an executive producer and consultant, and was shot mostly with bluescreen to duplicate the imagery of the original comic book work.

Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fight to the last man against Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his enormous army of more than one million soldiers. Facing insurmountable odds, the Spartans' sacrifice inspires all of Greece to unite against the Persian invaders. In Sparta, Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) attempts to rally support for her husband. The story is told through narration by Dilios (David Wenham) lending the film a historical fantasy feel.

It was released in both conventional and IMAX theaters in America on March 9, 2007.[1] The film became a box office record-breaker, although critics were divided over the film's look and style. Some acclaimed it as the next level of filmmaking while others accused it of favoring visuals over characterization. Since its release, 300 has stirred up controversy, being labeled as part of a series of Hollywood films with political overtones aimed predominantly at Iranian and other Asian cultures[2] - Tac'ehT™ , posted 03/16/07
